Sphagnum moss, a type of moss that helps keep Minn.’s northern lakes clear, has replaced chlorine at a public pool in St. Paul, Minn., says a Discovery Channel report. Minn.-based Creative Water Solutions has developed a product that uses this moss, which inhibits microbe growth without creating that unmistakable chlorine pool smell.

Trends & Innovations

I hate chlorine and I would love to try things like this in a pool…

Random Thoughts From People Our Age

  1. -I wish Google Maps had an “Avoid Ghetto” routing option.
  2. -More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can’t wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that’s not only better, but also more directly involves me.

Scientists working for NASA have managed to levitate mice using a superconducting magnet as part of research into the physiological impact of microgravity on astronauts, says a LiveScience report. The magnet is powerful enough to levitate the water inside a mouse, causing the creature itself to float in the air. The researchers found that mice can become disoriented when floating, but they act normally after 3-4 hours. Scientists previously levitated frogs and insects, but working with mice is more useful because they’re more similar to people.

Trends & Innovations

I never realized it was possible for people to levitate….

Sheep are being used to trim the weeds around the solar panels, so they are kept completely receptive to the sun. Sheep contribute less to global warming than do gas-powered lawn mowers. The practice of grass and weed management via sheep reportedly comes from Europe. (The United Nations in Geneva is also using sheep to keep its grounds well-manicured, and last year, the city of Turin, Italy brought in sheep to trim their parks, instead of using conventional lawnmowers.) Sheep can reach tight places between solar panels not easily touched by landscaping equipment. Using the shaggy herds could also carry the benefit of creating wool, depending on the type of animal selected.

Solar Panels Kept Efficient by Sheep! : CleanTechnica

Makes me wonder if people who live in rural areas should sometimes consider livestock in lieu of lawnmowers. I kind of like the idea.

Drying Food Using Your Car…
Um….ok, well first off, I’d be worried the car would smell. Should I not worry about that? Second, would an oven work? I mean you can heat ovens to 100-150 degrees. It’s not environmentally friendly which perhaps defeats the purpose, but I’ve never tried to dry fruit in the first place, so perhaps this article will prompt me to try….

Diva Cup

Another product I didn’t know existed … and was liked….

muroo:

antikris:

Apparently tampons dont do the trick quite as well when you’re bending and stretching in ways that your body is not meant to move.

Random plug: I don’t rave about things, but other people say that the Diva Cup has changed their lives.  I wouldn’t say that but I do say that it works quite well for me, and getting my period (if I have enough ibuprofen and coffee around) has become a non-thought.  And I haven’t bought pads or tampons for over a year now.  Fewer trips to the store!  Also you can leave it in safely for longer than a tampon, and also safely when you’re not having your period (like if you’re gonna spend the whole day out and about, and *think* it’ll start that day you can put it in).

Other common claims from actual friends of mine and not people on message boards so I feel they’re more true even though they’re not true for me:
- cramps are not as bad (tampons often have synthetic stuff that your body ends up absorbing, making cramps worse)
- period is shorter (?)

If I weren’t the kind of exact opposite of a neat freak that I am though, I can imagine maybe some people having trouble with the thought of a menstrual cup.  You’re gonna have to factor in a learning curve.

But yeah.  Um.  I’ll stop selling this now.  E-mail if you want more info. :-)
